Mutawintji (pron. moota win jee) is an Aboriginal name which means "place of green grass and waterholes". The Mutawintji National Park is situated 130km north-east from Broken Hill, the famous mining town in the far west of New South Wales.

The park is an area of great historical significance, located in the rugged Bynguano Ranges, a place of beautiful gorges and majestic River Red Gums. The presence of shelter and water means this idyllic place is home to a wide variety of wildlife and relics of European settlement can be seen in the area.

The gorges and cliffs hold the secrets of an ancient Aboriginal culture, rewarding visitors with examples of rock carvings, paintings and hand stencils that provide evidence of aboriginal occupation of the area dating back more than 8000 years.

The area known as Mootwingee NP was formally handed back to its' traditional owners in September 1998 and subsequently reverted back to its' traditional name of Mutawintji. This was the first National Park in New South Wales to be handed back to it’s traditional owners.

Your tour will start with a pick up from your Broken Hill accommodation, followed by a drive that takes in ever changing landscapes of the Barrier Ranges, bluebush and saltbush plains as far as the eye can see as well as mulga and red sand country.

We stop for morning tea along the way in the shade of majestic red gums lining a dry creek bed. After another short drive we enter Mutawintji NP and proceed to the restricted access Historic Site. Our guides are accredited by the traditional owners to conduct tours in the Historic Site. Some of our guides are Aboriginal and their cultural background and insight further adds to this unique experience.

Mutawintji is a place of ceremonies and initiations. At the Cultural Centre we learn about the creation of Mutawintji in the dreamtime and listen to the audio visual story of Kullawarra. This is followed by interpretive bush walks to both the rock engravings and the hand stencils galleries which serve as reminders of the many centuries of Aboriginal occupation of the area. The remnants of ancient fire places and stone tool making provide insights into the traditional Aboriginal way of life.

The bush walks are easy to moderate.
